FAQ

How do foreign editions work?
It’s a great question -- basically, as an author either I or my publisher has the rights to sell translations of the books in other countries. My publisher in the U.S. has the rights to North America (including Canada), and I resell the rights to the books to all the other countries you see here. But first, a publisher in that country has to be willing to put up the money to have it translated and produced in that country. (This is a very simplified explanation; it’s a contract issue, which is always hard to boil down.)

Why do foreign editions have different covers than the U.S. editions?
Many people don’t know this, but the artwork on the front of a book isn’t something that I own, as a writer. It belongs to the artist (or the company) who produced it. Sometimes that art belongs to an individual who sold the limited right to use it to a publisher; sometimes, the art actually belongs to the publisher. So foreign publishers usually end up doing their own art, or paying to reproduce the U.S. art, but generally it’s more expensive for them if they use the same artwork.
